DNR: Stay away from the Muskegon bear

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Muskegon Police and the Department of Natural Resources are asking residents to give space to a black bear that swam into the city from North Muskegon around 7 a.m. Monday.

The bear is believed to be a 200 pound young male; he is likely resting in a wooded area along the shore of Muskegon Lake. A bear expert thinks the bear will try to get outside the city limits Monday night.

Scott Shelagowski of Muskegon was fishing for bass at Pointe Marine Monday morning, not too far from Muskegon State Park. What he caught was a close encounter with a much larger animal.

"Heard something and it was a black bear right behind me about 30 yards. I seen him go through the boats rather quickly and he was swimming in the lake," said Shelagowski.

By the time he got his camera the bear was in the water and already heading to the side of Muskegon Lake with fewer places to go unnoticed.

Police profilers to assist in search for Jessica

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (AP) - State police profilers plan to assist in the search for a 25-year-old woman who disappeared from her job at a West Michigan gas station last month.

Norton Shores police Chief Dan Shaw tells The Muskegon Chronicle on Monday that Jessica Heeringa likely knew her abductor and they're focused on identifying a suspect. Shaw says state police behavior analysts are joining the investigative team this week.

The Norton Shores police department announced last week that blood found outside the gas station belonged to Heeringa.

Heeringa disappeared April 26 before she was set to close the station in Norton Shores, near Muskegon. Police said there was no indication of a robbery.

Police have released a description of a silver minivan and a man seen in the area.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Grand Rapids is getting another tribute to the men behind Meijer Stores.

On May 8, the Michigan Historical Commission approved a marker to honor Hendrik and Fred Meijer, who in 1962 became the first grocers to combine two popular retail models—discount department stores and supermarkets—into a single store on 28th Street, called “Thrifty Acres.”  The Meijers then took their model to Holland and Muskegon.

Meijer now has nearly 200 stores across the Midwest, including Kalamazoo, Walker, Wyoming, Jenison, Rockford, Plainfield Township, Forest Hills, Lowell, Grandville, Kentwood, Grand Haven and Greenville, where Hendrik Meijer opened his very first store in the 1930s.

The new historical marker will be added to more than 1,700 green and gold signs found across the state, that chronicle the people, places and events that make Michigan’s heritage unique and unforgettable.  The historical markers are nominated by spons

Video enhancement fails to get better van image

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) - Experts trying to enhance surveillance video of a van that may be in connection with a missing woman have failed in getting a better image.

Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw made the announcement Friday that efforts to enhance the video from the Coin Zone have proved to be ineffective. The image of the van in the video has been sent to other vehicle experts to see if they can get a better identification on the make and model of the van.

Jessica Heeringa disappeared from her job as a night clerk at the Exxon Mobil gas station on Sternberg Road in Norton Shores on Friday, April 26 at about 11 p.m. Police are treating her disappearance as an abduction.

Witnesses described a silver or gray van, possibly a Chrysler Towne & Country, having been at the station at the time of her disappearance. Surveillance videos show a van heading north on Grand Haven Road at the approximate time of the disappearance.
