Muskegon Museum of Art Achieves National Accreditation

Muskegon Museum of Art Achieves National Accreditation

The Muskegon Museum of Art has achieved accreditation—the highest national recognition afforded the nation’s museums—by the American Association of Museums (AAM). This is the third consecutive decade of accreditation for the MMA. All museums must undergo an extensive review at least every 10 years to maintain accredited status. The MMA was initially accredited in 1988. Of the nation’s estimated 17,500 museums, 775 are currently accredited.

MMA Executive Director Judith A. Hayner states, “The accreditation of this institution by the American Association of Museums speaks directly to the excellent quality of the MMA’s Foundation, staff, and membership.  We are indeed fortunate to have the immense support of our community, which is so clearly evident to our national reviewers.”

AAM Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public.

Meijer Scholar Athlete: Jamie Potts

Muskegon, Mich. (WZZM)- WZZM and Meijer are pleased to recognize Oakridge High School senior Jamie Potts as our Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of February 7th.

Jamie was a three-year starter for the Oakridge football team. A versatile player, he played quarterback, safety, placekicker and punter. He will attend Grand Valley State University where he will play tight end for the Laker football team.

Jamie is also a talented baseball player. He is expected to play centerfield for the GVSU baseball team. He is all-state in both sports at Oakridge and says the chance to play both in college was his big reason for choosing GVSU over Central Michigan.

Jamie's hard work extends to the classroom where he carries a 4.0 grade point average. He says he would like to study sports management or broadcasting.

Snow causes Muskegon warehouse to collapse

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - Heavy snow is responsible for the collapse of a roof at a lakeshore construction business.

The collapse happened around 2 p.m. Monday at Fredricks Company Inc. on Commerce Street and caused significant damage.

Employees tried to shovel two feet of snow from the roof, but were forced to stop when they heard the roof start to crack. They could only watch as the weight of snow cause the the roof of their warehouse to cave in.

Other employees evacuated the building and watched from the road as the building caved in.

"If you have ever watched a building implode, it kind of went, pop, pop, pop,... Then just all came down at one time. So, the walls started buckling out. It just came down," says Kurt Fredricks, of Fredricks Company Inc.

The building contains the company's window and siding stock.

At this time the warehouse is too dangerous to enter. The company office is still open.
