David Vs. Goliath showdown at The Harbor Theater

Have you ever thought about what you would have done if you were David when he battled Goliath? The Harbor Theater is screening the film Nowhere Boy beginning Friday November 4th and they are going head-to-head with the giant multiplex. The Harbor Theater is a small independent movie theater located on Lakeshore Drive. You can find movies at The Harbor Theater that you don't usually find at other theaters. The movies they run are world class films that are typically only available at The Harbor Theater. They normally screen a movie for a week which means that in order to stay operating they need every movie to do well. However due to a scheduling mistake by the movie studio this week they face an uphill battle because this weeks featured film is also being screened at area multiplexes.

Muskegon Big Reds prepare for playoffs

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - The Muskegon Big Reds are back in the Friday night spotlight on WZZM 13 this week. They're hoping the result is better than their two previous appearances.

Muskegon is 0-2 in our "13 On Your Sidelines" game of the week this season with losses to Rockford and Grand Haven. But the stakes are higher than ever this time around as a district championship will be on the line when they travel to 9-1 Greenville.

Shane Fairfield, who won his first-ever playoff game as Big Reds head coach last week against Forest Hills Central, says Greenville's dual-threat offense presents a big test for his defense. "Offensively, they run two different offenses and they run two offenses better than some teams run one. That's the scary thing. How much practice time do we emphasize on the tight (formation) and how much do we emphasize on the spread? They're very good at both."

Today's Cool Muskegon Fact

Muskegon, MI - Did you know that the City of Muskegon website has a section that gives some really interesting facts about the city? You can find it about half way down the right side of the homepage. Here's what I found there today:

Muskegon's Worst Maritime Disaster - At 4:20 in the morning of October 28, 1919, the wooden side-wheel steamer, City of Muskegon, tried to make its way into the Muskegon channel during a powerful storm. Huge waves slammed the ship into the south pier and in less than 10 minutes the Muskegon was battered to pieces. Fifteen of the 37 passengers lost their lives in the disaster, along with seven of the crew. Many more may have drowned if not for the efforts of Coast Guardsman, R. J. Jahnborsky, on watch at the Life Saving Station at the time. “I saw the boat coming towards the piers,” he said. “There was a gale but the ship seemed to be making good headway. It came alongside the piers and was caught by the undertow and struck.

Man rescued from burning van

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)- A Coast Guard member who helped save a Muskegon Township man from his burning van is sharing his story.

Witnesses tell police that Harold Torrenga swerved off Lakeshore Drive Wednesday morning.  He hit construction barrels, trees and a fence before crashing into a pile of docks at the corner of Cottage Grove.  The 83-year old man was trapped inside his vehicle when it caught on fire.  That's when two good samaritans, a Muskegon Police officer and two members of the Coast Guard, came to his rescue.

Brandon Hines with the Muskegon Coast Guard Station said the jumped the fence.  He says, "We needed to stop and help out any way we can."

Police believe Torrenga suffered a medical problem before the crash.  He was in fair condition Wednesday night at Muskegon Hospital.

Student's Canoe Found in Egypt

The 3rd grade classes at McLaughlin Elementary School in Muskegon, MI created foot long canoes that were put in Lake Superior in May of 2010. In the story Paddle to the Sea, an Indian boy carves a canoe and lets it go in Lake Superior hoping it will make it to the sea. Forty-one canoes have been released and students are hoping to get reports on where they are. Each canoe is numbered for a 3rd grader at the school (#1-41). The students will be monitoring the situation for years to come hoping their canoe will be found, perhaps traveling through the Great Lakes out to the sea.On Tuesday, May 25, 2010 twenty-one canoes were released in Lake Superior and then on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 twenty more were released on the south side of the Soo Locks.
