Video enhancement fails to get better van image

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) - Experts trying to enhance surveillance video of a van that may be in connection with a missing woman have failed in getting a better image.

Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw made the announcement Friday that efforts to enhance the video from the Coin Zone have proved to be ineffective. The image of the van in the video has been sent to other vehicle experts to see if they can get a better identification on the make and model of the van.

Jessica Heeringa disappeared from her job as a night clerk at the Exxon Mobil gas station on Sternberg Road in Norton Shores on Friday, April 26 at about 11 p.m. Police are treating her disappearance as an abduction.

Witnesses described a silver or gray van, possibly a Chrysler Towne & Country, having been at the station at the time of her disappearance. Surveillance videos show a van heading north on Grand Haven Road at the approximate time of the disappearance.

MSP: Successful first month of helicopter patrols

ROCKFORD, Mich. (WZZM) - It's been a month since Michigan State Police started helicopter patrols in West Michigan, but troopers are not getting the positive feedback they hoped for from the community.

Troopers are hearing some negative comments, and WZZM is hearing them too. The WZZM 13 Information Center has taken many calls from people complaining about the noise, many saying they don't like how close they are getting to their homes.

F/Lt. Chris McIntire is addressing those concerns: "It's going to become a little more normal for those that don't like it here right now."

The schedule has been tight for Michigan State Police helicopters in their first month in the area. "It's been in the downtown Grand Rapids area so much lately because of the flooding primarily, and it's caused us to fly a lot lower than we normally would fly."

Family prepares for Mother's Day without Jessica

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police in Norton Shores hope Michigan State Police can enhance two pieces of surveillance video in the Jessica Heeringa case.

The goal is to determine the make and year of the minivan they believe was used to take Heeringa from the Exxon station where she was working almost two weeks ago. Investigators are waiting on the video to narrow their search.

Police and Heeringa's family know if Jessica is still missing on Sunday, it will be a difficult day.

"Sunday is Mother's Day and we feel bad that she might miss it right now. But when she does get back, we will celebrate it then," says Diane Homrich, Jessica's grandmother.

Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw says investigators are committed to working throughout the weekend to find Jessica.

More than a dozen cats removed from RV

MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police say they removed an RV with more than a dozen cats from property on Kregle Road because it created a health hazard and violated a Muskegon Township ordinance.

The vehicle was moved to the Humane Society and Animal Rescue of Muskegon County on Tuesday.

Police say the vehicle's owners had recently demolished their house because of a number building code violations and moved the cats into the RV.

Police were able to catch more than 10 cats inside the RV while it was parked on Kregle Road. Moving the RV to the Humane Society allowed staff to coax the remaining cats out with food and catch them.
