Muskegon Motorcycle Gang remembers crash victims

FOND DU LAC, Wisc. (The Reporter) -- As Brad Groom boarded the Lake Express ferry with 11 other members of the Muskegon Motorcycle Gang on May 31, 2012, he had no idea of the horror that awaited the tight-knit group of friends across the waters of Lake Michigan.

The sun-bathed highway stretched out before the band of Michigan motorcyclists as they left Milwaukee, heading north through Wisconsin up to the Mackinac Bridge as part of the annual Bridge Run. There they planned to meet up with another group of motorcyclists and head back home through Michigan.

Relay for Life wants volunteers for cancer study

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - On Friday night, there's a chance for many people to join a nationwide fight against cancer.

At this year's Relay for Life in Muskegon, the American Cancer Society is asking people to join a long-term study that could help find a cure in the future.

For breast cancer survivor, Shawn Stephenson, Relay for Life changed her life forever.

"I never found a reason to come and walk and it made me mad when I was first diagnosed, because I thought why didn't I ever do this before," says Stephenson.

This year, the American Cancer Society is hoping to take an extra leap of progress, asking people to join a 30-year cancer study, called CPS 3.

"The individuals have to be between the ages of 30 to 65 having never had a cancer diagnosis," says Julie Yonkers, chairwoman of the CPS 3 study.

Construction starts on Egelston Township fire station

EGELSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A year and a half after voters in Egelston Township approved a millage to build a new fire station, the township is starting construction.

The station is being built behind the current fire station in the 5400 block of Apple Avenue. The old township hall will be razed to make room.

The delay was caused by intense debate over where to build the station; some township board members wanted to purchase land and build a short distance west of the township hall.

After pressure from township residents, the board decided to build on land the township already owns.

"It took a long time to get here. The people of Egelston Township were patient. We have a new team, we have a new board, and we are on the same team. And now we can finally put it up for the taxpayers," said Egelston Township Supervisor John Holter.

The new station is expected to open later this year.

Police scale back search for Jessica Heeringa

NORTON SHORES (Detroit Free Press) -- With tips dwindling in the case of a missing 25-year-old gas station clerk, police have scaled back the task force investigating her disappearance.

Jessica Heeringa, police have said, was abducted the night of April 26 near closing time at the Exxon Mobil station on East Sternberg Road in Norton Shores.

Police have fielded more than 2,000 tips related to her disappearance, but because the number of tips pouring in each day has fallen off the number of personnel on the task force has been reduced, Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw said today.

"But that being said, the case is still being actively investigated," he said. "We're not considering this a cold case by any means."

At its height, the task force had roughly 40 to 50 law enforcement officials from multiple agencies working on the case.

The task force is now made up of Norton Shores and Michigan State Police investigators, Shaw said.

Motorcyclist found dead along roadway

NORTH MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Investigators in Muskegon County are trying to determine the cause of a crash that killed a biker, whose body was found hours later.

A passerby discovered the motorcycle along Scenic Drive at Muskegon State Park around 7 a.m. Thursday. When police arrived, they found the rider, 41-year-old Matthew Thies of Fruitport, about 30 feet away in a wooded ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scenic Drive does not have street lights, so authorities say Thies could have been there for several hours. Investigators say it appears he was traveling southbound, swerved into the northbound lane, and then left the roadway.

Thies was wearing a helmet.
