Unity Rallies planned for the greater Muskegon Heights area

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM)- Community groups in Muskegon and the Muskegon Heights areas are hosting unity rallies over the next few days in response to the recent violence.

Thursday, August 26: The Stop the Violence Jump Start begins at 6 p.m. at the Elk's Charity Lodge.  That is located at 149 Ottawa Drive in Muskegon.

Saturday, August 28: An NAACP Community Forum will be held at the Muskegon Heights Board of Education Building at 10 a.m.  That is located at 2603 Leahy Street.

Sunday, August 29: The Raising Consciousness Black Unity Rally runs  from noon until 6 p.m. at Rowan Park.  The park is located at 113 East Broadway Avenue in Muskegon Heights.

Lumberjacks hosting auditions for National Anthem singers

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)- The Muskegon Lumberjacks are holding tryouts Tuesday, but they aren't looking for on-ice talent.

The team is holding open auditions for National Anthem singers. Those selected to perform will get four free tickets to the game at which they wing.

Tryouts run from 6-8 p.m. at the L.C. Walker Arena.

Singers must audition acapella and perform the anthem in one minute 30 seconds or less.

Anyone 18 or under must be accompanied by an adult.

SWAT team surrounds Muskegon Heights home

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM) - The Muskegon County Sheriff's Department SWAT team has surrounded a home on Sanford Street near Summit in Muskegon Heights.

Police have been on the scene since about 3 p.m. Monday. They have their automatic weapons drawn and are using loud speakers to tell a person inside the home to surrender.

WZZM 13's Jon Mills is on the scene and says he can see snipers on top of vehicles as well.  It's not known at this time if this is related to a number of recent deadly shootings in Muskegon Heights, including a shooting at 3 a.m. Monday near 5th Street and Summit Avenue.

Police investigating early morning shooting in Muskegon

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - Muskegon Police are investigating the shooting of a Muskegon Heights man early Monday morning.

Police say there were called to a local hospital about about 5:00am where a gunshot victim was being treated.  The victim told police that he was walking in the 1200 block of Terrace Street around 2:30am when he heard two or three gunshots and felt something hit him in the arm, which was in a cast from a previous injury.

The victim told police that he did not see anyone on foot or in a vehicle in the area at the time. No other reports of shots being fired in that area were called into police during the time.

The victim also told police he flagged down a female in a vehicle and she gave the him a ride to the hospital.

Cans From Fans food drive at the Muskegon Shoreline Festival

Muskegon, MI -- Cans From FansTM, a Muskegon-based Food Drive to collect non-perishable food items from fans attending community events, will host their second food drive at the 2010 Muskegon Shoreline Spectacular. The event runs from September 3 through September 6 and the Cans From Fans semi-trailer will be on site all four days. There will also be donation bins located throughout the event.

Attendees of the Shoreline Spectacular are encouraged to bring non-perishable food like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal, peanut butter and rice to the Cans From Fans semi-trailer. Those who donate food or make monetary donations will receive free parking at locations surrounding the event. Signs will be posted indicating participating parking lots.
