Four Muskegon County murders in a month and no arrests

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM) - After four murders in four weeks, some Muskegon County residents are demanding an end to the violence.

"Every week somebody get's killed, that's how bad it is," says a man handing out "Stop The Violence" leaflets in Muskegon Heights.

The latest murder victim is 23 year old Jeremy Lawrence. He was found shot to death sitting in a car in Muskegon Heights early Monday morning.

"I don't know how that child got killed," sobs his grandmother Elnora Carson. "People around here killing other people's kids for nothing. It's a pity."

Four young men have been shot to death in Muskegon Heights, Muskegon and Norton Shores since July 24.

None of the killers are in custody.

"As a community we need to get together and have a meeting and try to solve the problem," says the man with the leaflets. "It's bad, it's really go bad."

What organizers call a "Stop the Violence Jump Start" is scheduled to begin at 6:00 P.M. Thursday in the Elks Charity Lodge on Ottawa Drive.

Leaders say it's a county wide community reach out.

"It wasn't like this when we came to Muskegon 25 years ago," says Carson. "I don't know where this stuff came from."
