Goodwill celebrates anniversary with documentary screening

MUSKEGON – In celebration of its 60th anniversary, Goodwill Industries® of West Michigan, Inc. is bringing an award-winning documentary to the Harbor Theater in Muskegon with free screenings to the public October 11 – 14, 2010.

“For Once in My Life” is an inspiring, feel-good film about an unlikely group of musicians that work at a Goodwill Industries manufacturing facility in Miami, Florida. The 29 members that make up the Spirit of Goodwill Band face a wide range of mental and physical disabilities. Music is their shared joy. The film chronicles the individual band members as they prepare for a concert of a lifetime – struggling to learn and play new music, while coming together as a band.

Shattering preconceived notions of what people with disabilities are capable of accomplishing, the film is a moving story about the capacity for greatness within us all.

The film premiered to a cheering crowd in March of this year at the prestigious South by Southwest Film Festival (SxSW) in Austin, winning the Audience Choice Award for Documentary Feature. The film continues to rack up awards at other film fests, including Sonoma, Nashville, and Sarasota, and has even produced early press speculation about a possible Oscar nomination.

“We’re thrilled to be able to share this inspirational film as a special thank you to our program participants and their families, to our employees and volunteer board of directors, and to our extensive and growing network of collaborating partners, and the entire West Michigan community,” said Goodwill President and CEO Richard Carlson.   “In recognition of our 60 years of service to the lakeshore community, we hope the film will cultivate further awareness about our mission and the powerful impact Goodwill can have on the lives of the people we serve.”

Goodwill is offering ten FREE screenings: two private screenings for Goodwill program participants with disabilities and their families, one private VIP screening for donors and partners, and seven public screenings offered at a variety of times.

The free, public screenings are scheduled for: Monday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; and Thursday, October 14 at 3:00 p.m.

The Harbor Theater is located at 1937 Lakeshore Drive in Muskegon. Parking is available in lawfully permitted areas on the street, behind the building, and in the Great Lakes Marina parking lot.
