Muskegon County to host free County Parks Day May 4

The Muskegon County Board of Commissioners invites you to visit Muskegon County Pioneer Park or Twin Lake Park on May 4 for free.

This inaugural event starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and runs through 4 p.m.

Pioneer Park is a 145 acre park offers camping, swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, tennis, softball, basketball and volleyball. The park is filled with a variety of mixed oak, maple, white pine and hemlock pine trees. Pioneer is Muskegon’s  largest and most popular park. Pioneer Park is located on Lake Michigan and has over 2,000 feet of white sandy beach frontage. The park is located close to Michigan's Adventure amusement park, USS Silversides WWI Submarine Museum, art museums, theaters, summer festivals and other Muskegon County attractions. Pioneer Park is located on Lake Michigan on Scenic Drive, north of Muskegon. Take U.S. 31 to the Fremont/Big Rapids (M-120) exit, go southwest on M-120 to Giles Road, turn right (west) on Giles and follow five miles to the end of the road.  Turn right (north) on Scenic Drive; the park entrance is 1/4 down, on the left.

Twin Lake Park is a 15 acre park with shaded and open areas for family outdoor activities. The park has 800 feet of frontage on Twin Lake and is very popular for picnicking and swimming.  Twin Lake County Park is located on Twin Lake north of Muskegon on M-120.  Take U.S. 31 to the Fremont/Big Rapids (M-120) exit, go north on M-120 to the village of Twin Lake, turn left (north) on Blue Lake Road. The park entrance is 1/4 mile on the left.

 Events on Free Parks Day at Pioneer include:

All day: A sensory safari by the Lakeshore Sportsmen Chapter of SCI,  Wildlife from around the world, the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Division, the MSU Extension Office presents "The Importance of Water", and a small animal petting zoo, courtesy of the Muskegon County 4-H.

10 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Muskegon County Sheriff Seat Belt Convincer!

10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.: State Rep. Marcia Hovey-Wright (92nd District)

11 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Lakeshore Museum Center "Animal Clues"

12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: State Rep. Collene Lamonte (91st District)

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: State Senator Geoff Hansen

1 p.m. - 2 p.m.: "Can You 'Dig' It!" - Plant a flower and take it home!

1:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Muskegon County Public Health – Keeping your family safe

 

Events at Twin Lake Park include:

 All Day: Muskegon County Sustainability Department booth and display, Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Division and Dive Team, the MSU Extension Office presents "The Importance of Water", Dalton Township Fire Department's Spray House (putting out fires) and Bounce House (getting out safely), and USTA - Tennis demonstrations.

10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.: State Senator Geoff Hansen

10:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Muskegon County Public Health - Keeping Your Family Safe

12 p.m. - 2 p.m.: Brave Heart Raptor Rehab Center, Birds of Prey (live demonstration)

1 p.m. - 2 p.m.: State Rep. Marcia Hovey-Wright (92nd District)

1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Muskegon County Sheriff Seat Belt Convincer!

2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: State Rep. Collene Lamonte (91st District)

Bring your picnic lunch or enjoy refreshments available on site.

Muskegon County commissioners, Ken Mahoney and Rillistine Wilkins will also visit Twin Lake Park; County commissioners Susie Hughes and Terry Sabo will visit at Pioneer Park. Drawings will also be held at both parks for free annual passes to all of the Muskegon County Parks.  The free passes have been donated by: County commissioners Ken Mahoney, Susie Hughes, Terry Sabo, Rillistine Wilkins, Ben Cross, Jim Derezinski, Muskegon County clerk Nancy Waters, Muskegon County sheriff Dean Roesler, County drain commissioner Dave Fisher, Muskegon County Road Commission director Ken Hulka, Senator Geoff Hansen, Muskegon Township supervisor Dave Kieft Jr, Dalton Township supervisor Chris Hall, Egleston Township supervisor John Holter, Laketon Township supervisor Kim Arter, Muskegon Township trustee John Hughes, Consumers Energy and Bill Smith Used Cars. Drawings for the free park passes will be at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.; you must be present to win.
