My Town: New restaurants to replace shuttered sports bar | Business
ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich.—A new set of restaurants will soon replaced a shuttered sports bar, plagued by police calls.
Gipper’s Sports Bar and Grille was auctioned off last year. The bar lost its liquor license in January 2012, shortly after two shootings within three months at the bar.
Crews demolished the building and began building a new four-tenant retail complex last year. Each tenant has approximately 2,000 square feet. So far, a Sherwin Williams store has moved into the space, located at 3850 Alpine Ave. NW. A Verizon Store is expected to open in about six weeks. Signs tacked onto the windows of the remaining two storefronts indicate a Five Guys Burger and Fries restaurant will soon open in the space, as well as a Firehouse Subs franchise. Alpine Township building official Gary Campbell says Five Guys was awarded permits just three days ago, so it'll likely be two to three months before the restaurant opens. He says Firehouse Subs has about a three week head start on its neighboring restaurant.
West Michigan's first Five Guys Burger and Fries restaurants opened in Holland and Portage. A third location opened in Grandville last August and another franchise is expected to open in the former Perkins Restaurant in Norton Shores sometime this year.
