Baker College hosting College Goal Sunday

Students looking for financial help in going to college can learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during College Goal Sunday.

College Goal Sunday is a national event.  Baker College will host it on a local level, at its library, located at 1903 Marquette Avenue.  Visitors can get free assistance in completing the FAFSA form. 

Baker College will host College Goal Sunday on Sunday, February 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

West Michigan Youth Wintersports Fest starts Friday

The West Michigan Youth Wintersports Fest kicks off Friday, February 11.

According to the Muskegon County Convention and Visitors Bureau, participants will compete in approximately 21 different sports over three days.  The categories include, ice skating, inline skating, luge, hockey, figure skating, biathlon, cross country skiing, Alpine skiing, bowling, sled dog racing, snow shoe racing, karate, gymnastics, competitive cheer, target shooting, snowboarding and much more.

The athletes, who are all 18 years old and under, will represent communities throughout Michigan and the Midwest.

LC Walker Arena opens its ice to the public

The LC Walker Arena is opening its ice to the public when the Muskegon Lumberjacks are on the road.

Public skating is most weekend in the winter from 12:30 p.m.- 2 p.m.  Admission is $4.  Skate rental is also available for $4. 

The arena is located at 955 Fourth Street in Muskegon.

Buy Local, Think Global program providing discounts for green shoppers

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)—Those living and visiting Muskegon can get a bag full of discounts and coupons as part of a program promoted by the chamber of commerce.

The Buy Local, Think Global reusable shopping bag discount program is providing 1,000 residents and visitors with a free reusable shopping bag.  They can get exclusive, single use discounts, coupons or promotions from local businesses when they bring their special bag to participating places.

This Saturday, December 18, from 10am-12pm, a FREE Children's Book Give Away will be held at Ecclesia, (1050 W. Southern Avenue, Muskegon).  Books of various genres and age levels will be available.  Children / students are invited to help themselves to one book each while supplies last.

Cans From Fans final push to help feed local community - Friday, Nov 5

We need your help! We have 2 hours to collect 2,000 food items.

Join us this Friday November 5, 2010 from 11 am until 1 pm at the Independent Bank location at 3251 Henry St. (in front of Walmart) for an outdoor event to wrap up the Independent Bank food drive. Our food drive has been going on since mid-september. We are having a two hour finale to drive in donations and help feed our local community! Our goal is to collect at least 2,000 food items in two hours.

To help us reach our goal, we will be doing giveaways on site. Bring your non-perishable food donations and register to win great prizes like lunch at Subway, Cinema Carousel gift certificates, Hot-Rod Harley Davidson Jewery gifts or a haircut and style from Salon Bella Vida!

We will have coffee, hot chocolate, cotton candy, balloons and our mascot Eagle "Swift". So, join us during your lunch hour or feel free to bring the kids. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sensory Safari at Hoffmaster Harvest Festival Oct 15-17th

October 15-17th is Harvest Festival at Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon. Campsites will be decorated for Halloween, plus many fun events and arts and crafts for the whole family plus a continental breakfast Sunday morning. A special delight is the Lakeshore Sportsmen Chapter of SCI bringing their 'Sensory Safari' this 30' trailer is filled with mounted animals from around the world, furs, horns, and more to delight the senses. A rare 'hands on' event where kids young and old can feel the difference in hides needed for warmth in the Arctic well as the hot plains of Africa. The trailer has been a highlight of the event for the past several years and has added new items to the exhibit this year. Some of the favorites for this 'hands on'  exhibit are the full mounts of African Lion and Leopard and the full standing bear.  For more details contact the park at 231-798-3711.
