Elderly woman killed in Muskegon house fire

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- A woman in her 70's was killed Monday morning after her house caught fire in Muskegon.

The fire started around 8 a.m. in the 1200 block of Fleming Ave. Firefighters arriving to the scene found the two-story home engulfed in flames. They found 77-year-old Barbara Branyan on the second floor. She died at the scene.

Crews on scene tell WZZM 13's Jon Mills nine other people were able to get out of the house safely. They were taken to the hospital for observation.

Monday afternoon, the Director of Public Safety Administrative Offices said in a statement the cause is so far undetermined, and fire and police personnel are conducting a joint investigation.

The Muskegon Township Fire Department, the American Red Cross and Canteen 451 helped respond, as well.
