NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) -- This month, a Norton Shores couple will achieve something few couples ever get the chance to experience.

Harold and Theresa Shafer will soon celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary.

Harold says he first noticed Theresa walking by a cherry orchard near Hart in Oceana County way back in 1942. He asked her three times if he could give her a ride into town; she eventually said yes.

The two dated a short time; then on January 30, 1943, days before Harold reported to fight in World War II, they married inside the rectory at St. Mary's in Muskegon.

He was 19; she was just 17.

On Tuesday, the couple talked about that day and what it takes for couples to stay together as long as they have.

"I do not remember much about it, it just goes by so fast," Harold said. "Keep working and be happy."

"Patience," Theresa added. "You just play it by ear."

The couple has six children and now four-great-great grandchildren. They plan to celebrate their wedding anniversary later this month by going out to eat with their family.

Harold's Army service included fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.
