MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Recent technology improvements in the Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System led to a visit from Michigan Congressman Bill Huizenga.

The school system is in his district.

The schools are using four new labs that help students become problem solvers. The labs were bought with grant money from the Michigan Department of Education.

Huizenga and Superintendent Alana Zachery-Ross said they believe technology is becoming more and more crucial as students prepare for careers in the 21st century.

"They are going to be exposed to that science, technology, engineering, and math in a very new way -- very cooperative learning, very innovative," said Alena Zachary-Ross. "It causes them to be thinkers.  And that is what we want them to do is become problem solvers and thinkers."

"We know that the success of our country is dependent on our students making sure they have an understanding of science, technology, and math, and those kinds of things, so I am very pleased to see what Muskegon Heights is doing," said Rep. Bill Huizenga.

Students at the high school are are also learning how to use several pieces of new technology in a small television studio at the high school.
