MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)- Police say Stephen Karl Anderson, 49, from Kentucky is in custody for suspicion of Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated.
But investigators are baffled. They say Anderson claimed he drove his SUV into the Muskegon River Sunday morning. But they can't find it.
Chief of Police, Ken Sanford says, "It's kind of a bizarre case in that he shows up at the door. Some of it seems to make sense and parts of it doesn't."
Shortly after midnight, Anderson arrived at a home about two blocks away from the 1200 block of N. Creston Rd. and said he had passengers inside the SUV and was concerned for their well-being.
Dive teams were called out to the scene and swept the river, but they couldn't find anything. Since it was too dark, the search continued Sunday morning. They didn't find any vehicle in that portion of the Muskegon River. Then Anderson changed his story and said he was alone in the SUV.
Police say Anderson's blood alcohol level was at 0.18. He claims to have visited several bars and restaurants Saturday night between Holton and Muskegon.
"We're trying to track down the timeline of where he was last night. We've spoken to some of his family members. We're just trying to pin down where this vehicle might be. That's kind of what we're doing right now is looking for that car," says Sanford.
Anderson's vehicle is still missing. Police say it is a Silver 2001 Dodge Durango with Kentucky plates 928-GRA.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Muskegon Township Police Department at 231-777-1666 or Silent Observer.
