My Town Whitehall: Artists embrace the 'Change of Seasons' in juried exhibition

A graphite and pencil drawing garnered top honors at Arts Council of White Lake’s Change of Seasons Juried Exhibition, by winning artist was Eleanor Goudreau. The youth division was full of tremendous paintings, collages and photographs.

Winners were announced at the show opening and artists’ reception February 27. It runs through March 28 at the ACWL building, 106 E. Colby Street, Whitehall.

The 2015 Change of Seasons show drew 74 adult entries, of which 63 were accepted. The youth show has 48 entries.

My Town: Culinary Institute of Michigan indulges in sweet victory at chocolate competition

Chocolatiers from Baker College of Muskegon Culinary Institute of Michigan (CIM) carved up the competition at the 26th annual Michigan State University Museum Chocolate Party Benefit. Faculty members and students representing CIM Muskegon earned 12 awards, including the top two—Pastry Chef of the Year and Student Team of the Year.

The competition, sponsored by Great Lakes Gourmet, was part of the annual fundraising event for the MSU Museum that generated approximately $15,000 for the care and preservation of the museum's science and culture collections.

Competitors were asked to create chocolate masterpieces inspired by the feature film, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.” The CIM Muskegon had a strong presence in every category of the competition:

On Feb. 20, 2015, the Baker College of Muskegon Culinary Institute of Michigan hosted 63 hospitality students from seven career tech centers in Northwestern Michigan for the 2015 SkillsUSA Regional Competition. These students competed in four areas: Culinary Arts, Commercial Baking, Food & Beverage Service, and Team Banquet. Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC) students earned gold medals in all three events.

Team Banquet members Chef McCayla Dixon (Oakridge), Sous Chef Kaley Billman (Oakridge), Prep Cook Leah Stokes (Montague), Pastry Chef Samantha Wilson (Whitehall), and Server Kathy Allen (Whitehall) prepared and served a four-course “Taste of the Caribbean” menu. This gold medal winner included coconut lentil soup, watercress pineapple salad, Jamaican jerk pork tenderloin with black bean stew and rice, and finished with Cuban coffee custard.

Feb. 23, 2015-- The Consumers Energy Foundation announced today it has recently awarded 28 volunteer grants worth $14,125 to nonprofit organizations in Kent County and the surrounding area to recognize outstanding volunteerism by Consumers Energy employees and retirees. 

The foundation awards Volunteer Investment Program grants to encourage and reward volunteerism by those who work or have worked for Consumers Energy.

The Consumers Energy Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Consumers Energy.  It provides funding for a variety of areas including education, community, civic and cultural development, social services, the environment, and emerging issues.

Michigan nonprofit organizations received more than $10 million in contributions in 2014 from Consumers Energy, its employees, retirees, its foundation and parent company CMS Energy.
