Historic drive-in theater broken into

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)--  Muskegon police say the person who broke into the city’s historic drive-in theater may have been looking for food.

Someone discovered the break-in at the Getty 4 theater Tuesday morning.  A general manager says the suspect broke into the projection booth and concession stand, but nothing inside was damaged or missing.  Officers say the crime likely happened overnight.

Getty 4 is the only outdoor drive-in theater still operating in the region.

DNR looking for volunteers in West Michigan

DNR looking for volunteers in West Michigan

From the Michigan Department of Resources:

Join in the effort to Go Get Outdoors and protect critical dune, prairie and forest habitats stretching from Berrien to Muskegon Counties! State recreation officials announced the schedule of volunteer stewardship activities for the month of February as part of the new Volunteer Steward program in Southwestern Michigan state parks and recreation areas.  Volunteering for these workdays is a great way to GO-Get Outdoors in many of our cherished state parks, breathe some fresh air, have fun and get a bit of exercise while enjoying beautiful scenery and precious landscapes.

Volunteers can make a big impact by removing invasive, non-native shrubs in natural areas within state parks and recreation areas. Targeted invasive species include:  honeysuckle, autumn olive, barberry and Lombardy poplar.

Get Ready for Winter Fun at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex

The snow is almost here and the fun awaits at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex. The Winter Sports Complex located in Muskegon State Parks is just waiting for the cold weather and snow to help freeze the over an acre of outdoor rinks. When temperatures are below freezing the hockey rinks, family skating rink and the 700 ft skating trail are open to the public for their skating enjoyment.

In 2010 the Muskegon Luge & Winter Sports Complex installed a new family sledding hill.  It was designed for young children and their parents, although all ages are allowed.  There is no charge for the sledding hill, but you may want to make a trip to the lodge and warm up with a round of their great hot chocolate. Sleds are available for rent for $3.00 in case you forget to bring your own, or bring friends who do not have their own sleds, or simply just do not want to load them in and out of your car. Sorry but no snowboards or metal runnered sleds permitted.

Annual Christmas Bird Count begins on December 14

Annual Christmas Bird Count begins on December 14

Every year tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations.  Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission - often before dawn.  For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season.

Each of the citizen scientists who annually braves  the snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation.  Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action.

From feeder-watchers and field observers to count compilers and regional editors, everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Co

Muskegon suspends park event reservations

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)-- Muskegon city officials will currently not take park wedding reservations.

A city worker says  site reservations are being suspended until the city reviews a potential price increase.  The proposal includes increasing site rental fees from the current $100 to $125, generating more revenue for the cash-strapped city.

City officials are scheduled to discuss the proposal in January 2012.
