Culinary Institute of Michigan competes in Chocolate benefit

Students of the Culinary Institute of Michigan at Baker College are celebrating another win.

Teams from CIM competed in the 22nd annual MSU Museum Chocolate Party Benefit earlier this month. According to the school’s web site, Shelli Halman and Laura Alvarez, both from Grant, won first prize for their Asian-inspired piece.  It featured a Chinese warrior mask and two dragons with an orange spiced chocolate mousse torte.  The school says Joseph Gonzalez of Lapeer and Chad Starr of Howard City took third place with their Aztec-influenced work.  Ashleigh Hile of North Branch and Elizabeth Adamson of Grand Rapids woman the Premier Chocolatier Choice award for their Chai tea-flavored chocolate piece centered on Tanzania.

Muskegon winery will offer more Michigan made products

The owner of a Muskegon winery says he’s bringing in new products within the next couple weeks. 

Bob Stolarz says he’s adding new wines and Michigan made products, including cheese, to the tasting room, located on 5506 Harvey Street.  He recently began offering gourmet popcorn at the facility.

Right now, Stolarz says he’s working on propogating more vines ahead of the busy tasting and harvesting season.

Stolarz owns one of only two Michigan wineries that produce wine without sulfites.  Stolarz says he’s allergic to sulfites.

Free wine tasting on Saturday

Clay Avenue Cellars will hold a free wine tasting Saturday for visitors to sample their variety of Michigan fruit wines.

Clay Avenue Cellars is loacted at 611 Clay Avenue in Muskegon.  The Wine tasting will run from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday, March 12.  For more information, call (231) 722-3108. www.clayavenuecellars.com

Chili cook-off benefits Habitat for Humanity

You’re appetite could be the key to building more houses for struggling Muskegon County families.

Habitat for Humanity is holding its fourth annual Lutheran Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, March 5.  The competition will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1206  Whitehall Road in North Muskegon.  The cost is $2 per spoon, and $1 for unlimited votes for which chili should receive the People’s Choice award.

The visitor with the best western outfit will also win a dinner for two at Texas Roadhouse.

Free wine tasting Saturday

If  you are  looking for a free adult event Saturday, Clay Avenue Cellars is hosting a free wine tasting from noon through 6 p.m. 

Visitors are encouraged to sample the business’ variety of Michigan fruit wines.

Chamber of Commerce offers workshop to help businesses master social media

The Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce is offering hands-on workshops to help members master social media, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other popular websites.

Social media experts will walk members through setting up accounts, posting and managing content, ways to generate page interest, linking to feeds, separating your personal and business pages, using other media on your page, and how to grow your fan base.

The two workshops will be held at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on February 8, inside the computer labs at Orchard View Workforce Development Center, located at 2389 East Laketon Avenue in Muskegon.
