Timberland Charter Academy joins hockey team’s reading caravan

MUSKEGON, Mich.-- Players from the Muskegon Lumberjacks held a Faceoff Rally with students at Timberland Charter Academy on Tuesday, November 12.

Players talked to students about their year-long reading caravan program. Working with a reading coordinator at the school, the team will reward students each quarter who meet their school identified reading goals with items like T-shirts, book bags and even tickets to a game.

At the Faceoff Rally, players discussed how one of their goals in playing in the USHL is to get a college education and how important becoming a good reader is to reaching that goal. The students received a “Hockey 101” book explaining the basics of the sport and a bookmark to use through the year.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich.—When the Muskegon Lumberjacks take the ice on Wednesday, chances are some Muskegon County students will be watching, thanks to a new rewards program.

The program honors those who have excelled in the classroom with free tickets to a Lumberjacks home game. The students sit in a special section reserved and paid for by Community Schools Credit Union, County Teachers Insurance Agency and M3 Investment Services.

“Our partnership with the Muskegon Lumberjacks and area school districts is focused on promoting reading among area students. While many schools will use the tickets to recognize student reading efforts, many others already have student reward programs for positive behavior and academics in place.
